Black History Month spotlights

At home, we use Black History Month to discuss and reflect on a number of people who came before us. The ones that have paved the way and provided opportunities for many minorities to be successful. I try to teach my children about some of the lesser-known heroes and activists. Some of my personal favorites are Fred Hampton, John Lewis, and Medgar Evers. – Gabe, General Manager

Black History Month is important to me because it’s a time of year to reflect on the history of my ancestors. This month highlights historical facts that may not be regularly discussed to educate and offer insight to the past. – Greg, Office Services Clerk

Black History Month for me signifies a time for reflection, where we all have an opportunity to remember the past, both good and bad, and celebrate the contributions of others that look like me, as we all work to be better than the day, month and years before. - James, Senior Director

To me, Black History Month is a celebration of every single person who is a part of the African diaspora. It is representative of our struggles, our resilience and our triumphs. It shows that we are all connected, that we all share the same problems and that we can all work together to find solutions. It represents our unity and our continued effort to do better and be better. Black History Month is a time for highlighting the many accomplishments and contributions that African Americans have made to the scientific, educational and social justice fabric of our country. Because it helps us to remember there is no more powerful force than a people steeped in their history. And there is no higher cause than honoring our struggle and ancestors by remembering. It celebrates our will to push through adversity and highlights how far we have come. It represents my connection to a part of my identity and also emphasizes the responsibility I have to both myself and my community to continue to strive for greatness. – Evelyn, Sr. Project Manager
